The Nature Handbook : A Guide to Observing the Great Outdoors

Nature is full of fascinating stories, stories that attract our attention at a young age and keep us amazed throughout our entire lives. The need to understand nature draws us back to its simple beauty again and again, yet underneath this simplicity lies a complex web of associations and patterns. The Nature Handbook does what no other field guide does: explores and explains nature through these connecting patterns, revealing them to the many different types of nature lovers. All naturalists-- from birders to gardeners, hikers to environmentalists, wildflower enthusiasts to butterfliers-- will appreciate the different approach of the Handbook, even those whose interest in the natural world is just beginning to develop. Naturalists who are already well versed in one group of organisms--birders, for example--will find new explanations and patterns for their favorite group, as well as new patterns all around them that they had previously overlooked. Observations in the Handbook are arranged in the three main sections of plants, animals, and habitats. These sections are then connected through discussions of the relationship of size and shape, adaptations, distribution patterns, behavior, and diversity of life. Since the emphasis is on patterns rather than individual species, each chapter has cross-references to related topics …
The book is designed to invite browsing, and readers will gain a rich ecological perspective and insight. Curiosity about the world around us is a basis for human learning; The Nature Handbook serves to aid all nature lovers in their quest for understanding the many stories that our living world provides.

Christmas at the Movies : Images of Christmas in American, British and European Cinema

Edited by Mark Connelly

Whether we love it or hate it, Christmas has always played a special role in the cinema, and Christmas movies like It's a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street have a special place in popular affections. Christmas at the Movies takes a good look at these popular films, decoding the messages they convey about popular preoccupations and attitudes and about the different societies that produce them. Written in an entertaining and illuminating style, this book gives a brand new view of Christmas and its rituals.
(Excerpt from amazon.com)

During the nineteenth century the family reading of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol was one of the rituals of Christmas. In the latter part of the twentieth century, the ritual television showing of Frank Capra’s film It’s a Wonderful Life took its place. This is symptomatic of the process by which cinema became an integral part of the celebration of Christmas in the twentieth century …
We can read about the role of the Christmas film in wartime both in Britain and America, the cinematic career of Santa Claus and the rise and rise in popular esteem of It’s a Wonderful Life. But all is not just joy to the world and peace and goodwill to all men in the cinematic Christmas. There is a darker side, gleefully analyzed by Kim Newman, in which the schmaltz and saccharine conventions of White Christmas are undercut by the depredations of a parade of psycho santas and Christmas slashers …

With more than 400,000 copies now in print, The Craft of Research is the unrivaled resource for researchers at every level, from first-year undergraduates to research reporters at corporations and government offices ...
The Craft of Research explains how to build an argument that motivates readers to accept a claim; how to anticipate the reservations of readers and to respond to them appropriately; and how to create introductions and conclusions that answer that most demanding question, “So what?”
The third edition includes an expanded discussion of the essential early stages of a research task: planning and drafting a paper. The authors have revised and fully updated their section on electronic research, emphasizing the need to distinguish between trustworthy sources (such as those found in libraries) and less reliable sources found with a quick Web search. A chapter on warrants has also been thoroughly reviewed to make this difficult subject easier for researchers.
Throughout, the authors have preserved the amiable tone, the reliable voice, and the sense of directness that have made this book indispensable for anyone undertaking a research project.

Culture and Leadership, Across the World : The GLOBE Book of In-Depth Studies of 25 Societies

Culture and Leadership Across the World: The GLOBE Book of In-Depth Studies of 25 Societies is the second major publication of GLOBE (Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness), a groundbreaking, large-scale project on international management research featuring contributions from nearly 18,000 middle managers from 1,000 organizations in 62 countries, perhaps the largest project of its kind ever undertaken. This volume effectively presents a complex collection of global research addressing the culture of particular countries, leadership qualities within those countries, and recommendations on how managers should conduct business in countries other than their own.
A massive effort with a cross-cultural focus and broad international appeal, this book explores:
• how leadership is conceptualized and enacted in its cultural milieu;
• quantitative data including middle manager questionnaires, unobtrusive measurement, and participant observation data;
• qualitative research from interviews, focus groups, and media analyses; and
• theoretical and methodological pitfalls that arise in the effort to develop universal management theories.
This book is a coherent and well-organized presentation of the findings of the GLOBE Project and will appeal to scholars in leadership, management, international business, cultural studies; and also to practicing managers.

…This book is meant for many people. Devotees of the theatre, east or west, will find Siu Wang-Ngai's photographs a delight. They make the Chinese approach to drama concrete and vivid. The accompanying text gives these readers further access to this performance tradition by explaining the dramatic conventions and the stories. Those with a passion for China can use the photographs and text as an entry into traditional Chinese society, which still lives on the opera stage. The plays and commentary give them an intimate look at the lives of emperors, scholars, generals, common folk, and outlaws. Finally, this book is meant for all those who enjoy a good story. Chinese opera has a rich repertoire drawn from history, legends, myths, folk tales, and classic novels. These stories are full of colourful characters and surprising turns. It is not necessary to be interested in the Chinese dramatic tradition to sit back, like the Chinese audience of a regional opera, and enjoy a good yarn. Siu Wang-Ngai's record of regional opera performance makes these yarns come alive.

The Words of Peace: Selections from the Speeches of the Winners of the Nobel Peace Prize

“In our private and individual lives, all of us have a need to seek for heroes. In our own personal ambitions and life—analysis of what opportunities present themselves to us, the talents that we have, the unpredictable future—we need those on whom we can depend as a pattern. How can we live an exemplary existence? The measurement of that, the pattern for it, the guide for our own lives, comes from our heroes. How can we justify our dreams? How can we confirm our beliefs? How can we prove to ourselves that what we have been taught as children is true? How can we alleviate our doubts? How can we, in our own often naturally dormant lives, be inspired to action, sometimes even at the sacrifice of our own immediate well-being? We derive those inspirations from heroes.” These are my considered thoughts about heroes, presented in a speech in 1986. The Nobel Peace Prize was established to honor the heroes of peace, and this small book presents a collection of well-chosen excerpts from their addresses at Oslo, drawn both from acceptance speeches and from the lectures which each prize winner is expected to deliver.

Technology Matters : Questions to Live With

By David E. Nye
online access from ProQuest Ebook Central
check holdings in CityU LibraryFind

We use technology to shape our world, yet we think little about the choices we are making. In Technology Matters, Nye tackles ten central questions about our relationship to technology, integrating a half-century of ideas about technology into ten cogent and concise chapters, with wide-ranging historical examples from many societies. He asks: Can we define technology? Does technology shape us, or do we shape it? Is technology inevitable or unpredictable? (Why do experts often fail to get it right?)? How do historians understand it? Are we using modern technology to create cultural uniformity, or diversity? To create abundance, or an ecological crisis? To destroy jobs or create new opportunities? Should "the market" choose our technologies? Do advanced technologies make us more secure, or escalate dangers? Does ubiquitous technology expand our mental horizons, or encapsulate us in artifice?
These large questions may have no final answers yet, but we need to wrestle with them—to live them, so that we may, as Rilke puts it, "live along some distant day into the answers."

Cultural Intelligence : Individual Interactions Across Cultures

By P. Christopher Earley, Soon Ang
check holdings in CityU LibraryFind

In a global market where international teams, initiatives, and joint ventures are increasingly common, it is extremely important for people to integrate themselves quickly in new cultures. Effective strategies for selecting and training people on global perspectives are critical for managing businesses.
Current theories in management and psychology do not provide adequate frameworks to explain the successes or failures of people working and managing in foreign cultures. In this book, the authors develop the idea of cultural intelligence and examine its three essential facets: cognition, the ability to develop patterns from cultural cues; motivation, the desire and ability to engage others; and behavior, the capability to act in accordance with cognition and motivation.
In their presentation of this new conceptual framework, the authors provide a critical review of the existing literature. They explore the fundamental nature of cultural intelligence and its relationship to other frameworks of intelligence.

Readers may find some answers satisfactory, whereas others bewildering. This is in fact the reality of creativity research and education.

How Full Is Your Bucket? Positive Strategies for Work and Life

By Tom Rath and Donald O. Clifton
check holdings in CityU LibraryFind

The Theory of the Dipper and the Bucket
Each of us has an invisible bucket. It is constantly emptied or filled, depending on what others say or do to us. When our bucket is full, we feel great. When it’s empty, we feel awful.
Each of us also has an invisible dipper. When we use that dipper to fill other people’s buckets — by saying or doing things to increase their positive emotions — we also fill our own bucket. But when we use that dipper to dip from others’ buckets — by saying or doing things that decrease their positive emotions — we diminish ourselves.
Like the cup that runneth over, a full bucket gives us a positive outlook and renewed energy. Every drop in that bucket makes us stronger and more optimistic.
But an empty bucket poisons our outlook, saps our energy, and undermines our will. That’s why every time someone dips from our bucket, it hurts us.
So we face a choice every moment of every day: We can fill one another’s buckets, or we can dip from them. It’s an important choice — one that profoundly influences our relationships, productivity, health, and happiness.

Traditions of Writing Research reflects the different styles of work offered at the Writing Research Across Borders conference. Organized by Charles Bazerman, one of the pre-eminent scholars in writing studies, the conference facilitated an unprecedented gathering of writing researchers. Representing the best of the works presented, this collection focuses solely on writing research, in its lifespan scope bringing together writing researchers interested in early childhood through adult writing practices. It brings together differing research traditions, and offers a broad international scope, with contributor-presenters including top international researchers in the field.
The volume's opening section presents writing research agendas from different regions and research groups. The next section addresses the national, political, and historical contexts that shape educational institutions and the writing initiatives developed there. The following sections represent a wide range of research approaches for investigating writing processes and practices in primary, secondary, and higher education. The volume ends with theoretical and methodological reflections.
This exemplary collection, like the conference that it grew out of, will bring new perspectives to the rich dialogue of contemporary research on writing and advance understanding of this complex and important human activity.

The Personal Efficiency Program: How to Get Organized to Do More Work in Less Time

By Kerry Gleeson
This book is the culmination of experiences gleaned from the many highly effective people that we at the Institute for Business Technology have coached and trained over the past 20 years. The focus of our work has been on the process of personal productivity. What do these highly productive people do? How do they do it? Can their work behaviors be boiled down to principles we all can apply? The book is a near-complete set of the timesaving ideas and behaviors of these highly successful people. The book also includes proven strategies we have developed to help our clients embrace these productivity ideas and make them part of their behaviors.
Charles Dickens once said: “I never could have done what I have done without the habits of punctuality, order and diligence, without the determination to concentrate myself on one subject at a time.” This quote conveys many critical ingredients to success in work and life: habits of punctuality, order, diligence, determination, and concentration.

Say No to Impossibility
