—「我們」與「他們」，排外情緒湧現
收入與財富不平等日益擴大，更加深民眾「不在同一艘船」的感覺，認為外來者會瓜分福利，因此排斥外國人、移民和菁英。政治氛圍愈來愈傾向於保護主義，各國在經濟、財政乃至於軍事上容易爆發全面衝突，全球化的進展遭遇愈來愈嚴峻的考驗。

—全球化浪潮退後，誰坐收漁翁之利？
既然不是人人都能得到好處，這個世界為何不能「去全球化」呢？試想，倘若希臘、義大利、西班牙等國的經濟長期停滯，德國這些強國持續繁榮，歐元就可能無法存續；假使世界強權日漸擁抱民族主義，跨國組織將受到打壓，國際貿易可能崩盤；如果物價礙於央行的措施而逐漸遭到扭曲，資本市場就可能無法發揮功能；毫無效率的資金配置將使得生產及收入雙雙下滑，各國便得付出慘痛代價。

—各國發展環環相扣，沒有人是局外人
最可怕的是，西方民主國家變得只想追求狹隘的自身利益，某些極權國家就會趁機填補空缺。美國經濟長期表現不佳，它既不願、也無力持續擔任領頭羊；但美國退縮之後，全球局勢更加混亂了。未來，歐盟如果瓦解、歐洲分裂，如何抵擋隔壁張牙舞爪的俄羅斯？那些威脅解散北約的人若不能建立可靠的替代機構，如何繼續維護集體利益？國與國之間的糾紛，由誰主持公道仲裁？與其擔憂國內日漸增加的移民，協助那些較貧窮的地區發展經濟，不是更能從根本上解決問題嗎？

—不確定的時代，我們的義務從現在開始
放任贊成孤立與保護主義的思想流竄，當他們的觀點成為主流的那一天，我們就必須面臨黯淡無望的新世界。對此，史帝芬．金恩在本書最後寫了一則寓言：西元2044年，川普的某個女兒成為共和黨候選人，她在演說中強調將繼續奉行孤立主義，禁止外國人進入美國；彼時歐盟已經瓦解，北約不復存在，俄羅斯趁機坐大，中國掌握整個東亞和太平洋，曾經有主權爭議的島嶼都歸它所有。這樣的新世界，是我們樂見的嗎？
