《陳寅恪的最後貳拾年》裡引陳先生一九五七年給劉銘恕的信，說：「弟近來仍從事著述，然已捐棄故技，用新方法，新材料，為一遊戲試驗。固不同於乾嘉考據之舊規，亦更非太史公沖虛真人之新說。」陸鍵東先生格外重視信上所說的捐棄故技、新方法、新材料等語；余英時先生則認為「亦更非太史公沖虛真人之新說」一語才是關鍵：「試想太史公沖虛真人都是老古董，怎麼忽然變成了『新說』呢？其實陳先生這裡用的正是我一再指出的暗碼系統。太史公是司『馬』遷，沖虛真人是『列』禦寇，他其實是說，他研究歷史決不用『馬列主義』啊！」

陳寅恪的思路是那樣的曲折幽深，余英時的悟性是那樣的高妙博通，我嘆為觀止之餘，常常從他們的文字裡攝取營養，給自己的筆進補。這本《英華沉浮錄》第九卷於是題書名為《給自己的筆進補》。
