在日本，以漢語寫成的文學作品，以詩為盛，漢詩是日本文學，特別是日本古代文學的有機組成部分。在日本文學漫長的歷史發展中，漢詩人寫出了數量既多質量又高的作品。中日兩國，語言雖異，但文字部分相同，因而漢語古典詩歌這種藝術樣式，能夠長期地風行日本。不僅朝野廣為傳誦，而且群起取則，抒情言志，運用自如，詩人輩出，卓然成家。這是國際文化交流史上非常值得珍視的現象，也是一衣帶水的兩個鄰邦在源遠流長的交往中結出的豐碩成果。……
漢詩在日本興起、發展、繁榮，到形成獨特的“日本漢詩”風格，最後終於式微，大約有一千三百年之久。考察一下日本漢詩的風會遷移，不難發現與中國詩歌的發展、詩家的主張，每有桴鼓相應、鐘磬和聲之處。東瀛詩苑宗唐宗宋、復古變革之爭，獨尊一家或兼收並蓄之別，往往或遲或早受着中國詩壇風尚的影響。
