土地是香港最稀缺的資源，以此而生的住房問題一直是收入不高的人們與政府的沉重壓力。只要凝視著任一張香港公屋的照片，很難不感受到衝擊：這麼多家戶、這麼多種人生、這麼多的人，被框在一個又一個小小的方格子裡；數量龐大的方格子在窄仄的土地上堆疊成高聳的大樓，多棟大樓再組成屋邨……截至二〇二三年八月，香港有二百五十九條公共屋邨，是近三分之一香港人的生活空間；而等候住進公屋的申請案超過二十三萬件，平均要等五‧三年才有機會「上樓」——住進公屋。

許多人認為公屋的起源是由於一九五三年的石硤尾大火，其實在此前，港英政府已有思考公屋政策，背後的考量有指是為了維持殖民地社會穩定及對資本家做出變相的勞工宿舍補貼。由方格子組成的公共屋邨是由政府建造、框限出來的空間，代表的是一種管治術——這在港英或九七後的港府皆然——在屋邨中政府無所不在。當人住進公屋，他不只是單純的居民，而是從「人」變成可被管治的對象。然而，人畢竟是擁有自由意志的存在，既使發言的空間再緊縮，仍想要訴說自己的故事； 看似一模一樣的方格子，在生活其中的人的努力及歲月的浸潤下，也會長出不同的模樣；夜晚時亮起燈來的千門萬戶，也絕不只是下了工看劇、睡覺的地方，而是儲藏記憶與凝聚認同的所在。

2015年，香港特區政府發表《人口政策：策略與措施》報告，統計自1980年以來，約有八十萬香港人移居外地，而加拿大是香港人熱門移民地點之一。兩地雖然隔着遼闊的太平洋，但早在十九世紀末已有頻繁的人員往來。第二次世界大戰讓兩地關係更為密切，成為命運共同體，因為兩地民眾要面對共同的敵人。1941年11月，接近二千名加拿大官兵，在羅遜准將帶領下乘船抵達香港，他們的任務是協助駐港英軍抵擋日軍。十八天激烈戰鬥，造成了二百九十名加拿大官兵陣亡，其中包括羅遜准將。今天，他們仍長眠於香港西灣國殤紀念墳場與赤柱軍人墳場。本書不只是重塑加拿大官兵如何被牽扯進香港戰役，更關注戰爭結束後生還的加拿大官兵的生活，從而闡述戰爭對軍人所造成的身體上和心理上的創傷。

In this book, Hong Kong is seen as a labyrinth, a postmodern site of capitalist desires, and a panoptic space both homely and unhomely. The author maps out various specific locations of the city through the intertwined disciplines of street photography, autoethnography and psychogeography. By meandering through the urban landscape and taking street photographs, this form of practice is open to the various metaphors, atmospheres and visual discourses offered up by the street scenes. The result is a practice-led research project informed by both documentary and creative writing that seeks to articulate thinking via the process of art-making.

As a research project on the affective mapping of places in the city, the book examines what Hong Kong is, as thought and felt by the person on the street. It explores the everyday experiences afforded by the city through the figure of the flâneur wandering in shopping districts and street markets. Through hisown street photographs and drawing from the writings of Byung-Chul Han, Walter Benjamin and Michel de Certeau, the author explores feelings, affects, and states of mind as he explores the city and its social life.

近年來，圍繞新界「丁權」的「傳統權益」問題，香港社會時有爭論。所謂「丁權」，是指香港新界原居民的男性後人（即「男丁」），按殖民地時代沿用至今的「小型屋宇政策」（丁屋政策），獲准在新界的私人土地上興建房屋居住。《基本法》第四十條規定：「『新界』原居民的合法傳統權益受香港特別行政區的保護。」但對於何謂「新界原居民的合法傳統權益」，香港特別行政區應如何保護此類權益，《基本法》第四十條並沒有明示。因此，「丁權」的存廢爭議，焦點也就落在其是否《基本法》所指的新界原居民合法傳統權益之上。

「丁權」涉及新界原居民的利益和《基本法》的解釋，特區政府一直未敢妄動。本書作者特以此為主題，嘗試解釋《基本法》第四十條的學理、規範內涵，以釐清「合法傳統權益」的內容。書中提出了一系列的問題：「新界」和原居民由何而來？傳統權益包括哪些？《基本法》對原居民的權益作了何種保障？原居民權益是特權嗎？誰有權解釋《基本法》第四十條？適宜的解釋方法為何？「丁權」屬於合法傳統權益嗎？調整「丁屋政策」非修改《基本法》不可嗎？
