香港文學的發展不是建立在對於「非本土」的否定之上，也不是簡單地由無到有的過程，實際上存在更多的矛盾、游離。本土與非本土共同構成香港文學本土意識的複雜性，結合流動與根著的辯證，作為本書《根著我城：戰後至2000年代的香港文學》回顧、論述戰後至2000年代香港文學的核心。

陳智德的《根著我城》以文學史架構為綱的系統論述，主要論及的作家包括望雲（張吻冰）、趙滋蕃、張一帆、阮朗、曹聚仁、徐訏、力匡、舒巷城、楊際光、馬朗、蔡炎培、劉以鬯、西西、梁秉鈞（也斯）、鄧阿藍、洛楓、董啟章、潘國靈、謝曉虹；也旁及符公望、黃雨、沙鷗、葉靈鳳、陳君葆、何達、唐君毅、林以亮、夏侯無忌（齊桓）、司馬長風、吳煦斌、松木（蔡振興）、戴天、馬覺、崑南、盧因、陳冠中、葉輝、游靜、馬國明、李碧華、辛其氏、郭麗容、鍾玲玲等。

陳智德在《根著我城》一書討論香港文學的不同之處是本土意識的不同面向。1930年代至2000年代多種不同時代、不同風格的作品，香港文學的本土意識，在不同年代具有不同的方向，而本土意識並不等於對地方人事的肯定，也可以包括對地方的否定和批評。因應近現代中國歷史發展的特殊狀況，認識香港文學以至台灣文學的個別性發展，才能認識中國現當代文學的全局，因此本土並不狹窄，反而是通往普遍之途，正如抗戰時期的民族形式論爭所提出，地方認同並不與民族認同相矛盾。
